What is a Mail Server?
A mail server is the computerized equivalent of your friendly neighborhood mailman. Every email that is sent passes through a series of mail servers along its way to its intended recipient. Although it may seem like a message is sent instantly – zipping from one PC to another in the blink of an eye – the reality is that a complex series of transfers takes place. Without this series of mail servers, you would only be able to send emails to people whose email address domains matched your own – i.e., you could only send messages from one example.com account to another example.com account.
What are the benefits of having domain-based email addresses?
A domain-based email address, like firstname.lastname@example.org, helps you look more professional with customers and promotes your website and company. In fact, customers are 9 times more likely to choose a company with a professional email address. Every time you send an email from a domain-based address, you’re putting your domain name in front of customers and encouraging them to visit your website.
And with each plan, you can create free ‘alias’ addresses – like one using your first name (email@example.com) and others for different departments (firstname.lastname@example.org) — that all feed into a single inbox and make you look even more professional.
What is a domain name?
A domain name, a series of textual characters that identifies a specific IP address, uniquely identifies a website on the Internet. Domain names locate businesses, organizations, or other entities on the Internet. Domain names are easy to remember, easy to type alternatives to obscure URL’s that you receive with free website hosting services. Using a domain name allows you to receive more visitors, less bounced emails, and the chance to make a lasting impression on the Web.
A great benefit of using your domain name is that regardless of how many times you change your access provider, your Email and website address will always remain the same.
How do spam & virus filters help me?
Our filters help reduce spam and protect your computer from email viruses by catching, filtering, and disposing of spam messages and email viruses before they reach your inbox.
What is a POP3 ?
• POP stands for Post Office Protocol, and was designed as a simple way to access a remote email server. The most recent version is POP 3, and is supported by virtually all email clients and servers.
• POP works by downloading your emails from your provider’s mail server, and then marking them for deletion there. This means you can only ever read those email messages in that email client, on that computer. You will not be able to access any previously downloaded emails from any other device, or with any other email client, or through webmail.
What is a IMAP?
• IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol, and was designed specifically to eliminate the limitations of POP.
• IMAP allows you to access your emails from any client, and any device, and webmail login at any time, until you delete them. You are always seeing the same emails, no matter how you access your provider’s server.
• Since your email is stored on the provider’s server and not locally, you may run into email storage limits, when using IMAP.
IMAP or POP3?
If you think that IMAP and POP3 are interchangeable, think again. POP3 works by contacting your email server and downloading all of your new messages from it. Once they are downloaded, they disappear from the server. If you decide to check your email from a different device, the messages that have been downloaded previously will not be available to you. POP3 works fine for those who generally only check their email messages from a single device; those who travel or need to access their email from various devices are much better off with IMAP-based email service.
What is Email Forwarding and how does it work?
Email forwarding allows you to forward your email from one email address to another. For example, email@example.com could be forwarded to your current email address, giving you the ability to receive all email at one address.
